It is estimated that 80-90% of African artworks are to be found outside the continent. With this in mind, it's easy to see how essential it is to rethink the museum and our museum practices, if we are to see the emergence of places where African citizens can reappropriate their heritage and history. In light of this, the Koffi & Diabaté architecture firm has designed the Musée International du Vodun, a project that won the WAFX Prize at the 2023 World Architecture Festival in the culture category.
Chosen from over a hundred proposals, this emblematic museum is part of the Beninese government's Action Program, which seeks to highlight Benin's rich cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on Vodun culture. Vodun culture, which originated in the 17th century in the former Kingdom of Dahomey, has extended its influence in West Africa, beyond the continent's borders to South America and the Caribbean.
The Musée International du Vodun, located in Porto-Novo, the capital of Benin, on a site of some 16,000 m², adopts a circular, organic architecture inspired by the Tata Somba, the emblematic earthen fortresses of the Somba people in northern Benin. Comprising five major spaces, including a reception building with an auditorium, a temporary exhibition hall with independent access, and four permanent exhibition halls, the museum promises a museum experience unique in West Africa.
One of the key aims of the Musée International du Vodun is to deconstruct the negative stereotypes surrounding Vodun, while promoting a form of cultural tourism around the rich range of elements that make it up. As well as showcasing the universality of Vodun culture and the arts inspired by its history, the museum also aims to support scientific research.
By legitimizing a long-ignored spiritual practice, the museum positions itself as a powerful guide, preserving and promoting Benin's rich heritage. It offers an opportunity for local and international visitors to explore and appreciate the richness of Vodun culture and its profound impact on history and society. The WAFX Award recognizes Koffi & Diabaté Architectes' innovative vision and commitment to cultural preservation on the world architecture stage.
